Dr TR Schellenberg, Director of Archival Management at the National Archives in Washington DC, visited Australia in 1954 on a Fulbright Scholarship. Dr Schellenberg strongly advocated the separation of Australia’s national archives from the National Library. He proved to be such an excellent salesman for this point of view that his visit was pivotal in our history. Michael Piggott’s Master of Archives Administration thesis, The Visit of Dr TR Schellenberg to Australia 1954: A Study of its Origins and Some Repercussions on Archival Development in Australia, analyses the visit and its impact. Piggott, M, The Visit of Dr TR Schellenberg to Australia 1954: A Study of Its Origins and Some Repercussions on Archival Development in Australia, Master of Archives Administration thesis, University of New South Wales, 1989.
